Everyone knows the value of having a reliable home defense strategy. Other than installing a security alarm system, a good guard dog is the next best thing. Man’s best friend has been deployed for thousands of years and domesticated into many roles to serve humans. Some breeds make better guard dogs than others and below are some of our favorite furry giants that we believe make the best home guard dogs.
German Shepherd
This beautiful animal is very iconic for being the go-to police K-9 unit dog, and for very good reasons. The GSD originally had a natural instinct as a herding dog, and excelled quite well with little direction. From there, these dogs have been harnessed and advanced to be used in military service due to their high level of intelligence, athleticism, trainability, and temperament.
Rottweiler
Originally coined as the “Butcher’s Dog,” this canine’s strong muscular stature was very helpful in transporting butchered cattle on farms in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. With the advent of technology, their work in hauling soon ceased and transitioned into more protective types of roles.
Staffordshire Terrier (Pit Bull)
Also known as the Pit Bull, this particular dog breed has gotten a bad rap over the years due to their instinctive nature to be protective. However, with proper love and training, these pups can be great companions and guard dogs. They are very strong, stalky, and super loyal to their owners. Their coats also come in a variety of colors.
Doberman Pinscher
This elegant and large canine received its name in 19th Century Germany, from a man named Louis Dobermann. This man was a tax collector and he bred these dogs to accompany him on his rounds, giving the Dobermann the nickname “Tax Collector’s Dog.” Dobermanns are highly intelligent and athletic, they require lots of exercise, but they will definitely defend your home in return.
Boxer
Boxers have a very dynamic personality – upbeat, energetic, hard-working, playful, loyal, and courageous. They get their name from how they spar with their front paws when playing or in defense. They were used as war dogs as far back as the Assyrian Empire in 2,500 B.C. Make no mistake, the Boxer is a great companion and working dog for your home defense needs.
